Me, who cares if it is a few days out of date. I've been eating it for years and have never had diarrhoea or been sick everywhere. I buy the food for my work and I save about a fiver a week and none of them notice.

I have a tip - if you get your mortgage and savings account in the same bank/building society, you can link them and offset the interest on one against the other - reducing your mortgage

Hey eds or anybody know about the 5% mortgage scheme it's sounds a good a option for me I'm 22 years old and a bit naive when it comes to property (I don't want to get stung), I also have a baby due in October! Was wondering if anybody new if it was a good idea are the company Taylor wimpey trusted? Would really apreciate any info thanks.

any legal experts around? How much is it to make a will these days? I know what lawyers are like for charging so any ideas what sort of fees to expect before i get in there so i can try and keep it reasonable.

{Ed033's Note - The cheapest way is to make your own will. If you type into your favourite search engine, "will writing kit", you obviously get lots of results back. Amazon have a will writing kit. There is nothing stopping you doing it yourself.

(1)
(0)

Ok Ed thanks, wasn't sure you could do that, thought there'd be some sort of legal trickery that means you need a lawyer to do all the legal stuff, you now what lawyers are like for making money, worse than the bankers. {Ed001's Note - you just need your signatures to be witnessed, that's the important thing.}

(1)
(1)

Many people prefer to have a solicitor do their Will purely for peace of mind. Others do it that way because they think it has to be done. It doesn't.
Cost of a Will? Should be very little. No more than £30 or so but some solicitiors will do it for free. They know they'll make money from your estate when you die.

i`ve got a 5yr old bmw which i love driving, but petrol costs loads. was thinking of getting 15 yr old fester, to do the lil running round jobs.
my question is whats best /cheapest way of insuring it? and will it be any cheaper to actually get a 2nd car just for me? many thanx
dbadger..

(2)

Insurance, tyres, tax, mot, petrol, then because its 15 years old it will need parts all the time,
You would have to sell your BMW just to fund the rust bucket.

Does anyone know a good place to sell old dvd's and cd's etc?

I looked at that muiscmagpie site but they offer you literally pennies which is quite shocking.

I suppose there's ebay but that's a lot of hassle.

Palmed some off to my brother in law for about a tenner, worked out a quid each. Not too fussed.

Here's a tip for SKY. Phone them up and choose the option "your thinking of leaving us" when you get through tell the person you are leaving because you can no longer afford the direct debits as they are to expensive. The SKY service person will then offer different cheaper options which will include your same package but a discounted rate for 6 months or whatever the case may be, if this deal isn't available they will offer you sky sports or movies free for a duration.

I have been doing this for the past 3 years and I have always saved money in the past 3 years I have not once paid my full premium.

My best saving is Sky's full package for £26.00 a month saving about £40 a month
Good luck and Happy saving

(2)
(1)

What if you already have the full package and call to say you cant afford it, they just say we can remove movies or sports to save you some money....doesnt always work mate.

I know the British do not go in much for haggling but I tried it last year and got good response from shops.
Tips I was told and tried were go in early when shop is quiet, do not haggle with the wee part time junior talk to a saleperson or better supervisor or manager, someone with authority to give discounts.
Be polite but firm, do not raise your voice if not getting required response. Show person your money and tell them if you do not spend it in his shop you will spend it elsewhere.
There is two ways of getting discounts, firstly is cash but secondly ask for a shirt etc.. if you buy a suit, or a pair of shoes. If shop is getting decent money they will throw in a freebie. good hunting. Timalloy

(4)
(1)

Thansk timalloy will try in the near future. Mort.

(2)
(0)

Just wanted to update you all how I got on with my haggling, yesterday.
I needed a new suit for business occasions, so I went out with only £300 got lovely 3 piece suit knocked down from £450 to £200 (honest) I cheekily asked for shirt and tie to go with it and got the three for my £200 (shirt cost £19.99 and tie £9.99)
Went into shoe shop and got 2 real leather pairs of shoes for £50 (both half price)
So in summary I spent £250 on suit, shirt, tie, 2 pairs of shoes from my budget of £300 for just a suit.
Honestly try haggling it really does work if you have cash to spend, stores want your business and will throw in a "sweetener" but you have to ask for it.
Timalloy

(0)
(1)

So how did you start, what did you say to get the suit down so much?

(0)
(0)

I am not that good a haggler, suit was already reduced but I went in with positive attitude and let saleperson see my money and got some more off it. They wanted sale, I had money to spend end of. Please try it yourself. Timalloy

(0)
(0)

Ok not so much of a suit wearer but i guess could be useful thanks.

(0)
(0)

It does not have to be a suit, that was my example as I needed new one. Go into whatever shop you want to buy from, be polite and ask what discounts are available, big money items can get you bigger discounts TV, Sofa, Carpets whatever you want to buy haggle and see what happens Timalloy

Paper plates and plastic knives and forks are cheap saves on washing up liquid. Also do socks and other smalls in the kitchen sink. Leave them overnight in hot water with a good splodge of fairy. Give it a couple of good stirs. Saves on washing powder. Maybe not advisable for women's small and lacy efforts but alright for blokes stuff

Wouldnt fit my mrs smalls in the kitchen sink,lol,bath could be good though

Anyone got any tips for BT?

Currently on broadband option 3 paying 24 quid. Throw in line rental and vat its not a good deal.

Also have some stupid unlimited weekend plan, but as hardly make any phone calls that can go.

Cheers {Ed001's Note - I just moved to Orange, £5 a month for unlimited broadband + free weekend calls and the line rental is £12.75, which is less than BT too. The package is £10 if you don't have an Orange mobile.}

(0)
(0)

So £17.75 + calls + vat then. How's the broadband? {Ed001's Note - they won ISP of the year for this year. I only ordered it this week, just waiting to be switched over now, but it has to be better than Virgin Media and their appalling customer service. I never swore in front of my daughter before getting on the phone to them, she is 10, so that will give you an idea of how bad they are!}

(0)
(0)

Really? I was considering virgin.

I will see what BT have to say when i call them in the week then go from there, thanks Ed. {Ed001's Note - I would not recommend Virgin, their customer service is the worst I have ever encountered. I have been with them 6 months and my internet has not worked properly in the entire time.}

(0)
(0)

Dont go anywhere near aol,foreign staff who stick to a script when talking to you and have no idea,they have also joined with talk talk and they are just as bad and were my rerason for leaving due to bad dealings with them in the past

mark d

(0)
(0)

Ok cheers looks like its talk to bt and threaten them with orange then

(0)
(0)

Wow, gotta say ed i'm with virgin and they've been excellent for me giving me half price deals for six months and also whenever i have a rob with my internet which is nt often)its sorted within the hour. they have been alot better than bt who were apalling at best.
huddz red {Ed001's Note - I have heard bad things about BT too, which is why I went with Orange.}

(0)
(0)

For the best Internet provider In your area just google it they will give you estimated speeds to your line. It's normally the lowest estimate that you'll receive 3mbps is workable for basic household Internet. I find plus net the best customer service. talk and tiscali were terrible to deal with. Always overseas call centres.

Cashback sites people. For example, Quidco. I changed broadband supplier recently to Orange, and by going through Quidco, I got 150 pounds cashback and 20 quid of HMV vouchers.
I also get a fiver off the monthly cost of my broadband because my mobile is with them as well.
Also, check out Martin Lewis' excellent website moneysavingexpert.com

Moneysavingexpert has a section on cashback sites and highlights pro's & con's of the different sites available.
Another good site is hotukdeals.co.uk, which highlights, er, hot UK deals..... for example, apparently Asda are doing ten cans of Guinness (440ml) for 7 pounds.

phones4u are a very good company to "exploit" in the same way sky were mentioned earlier....
a few years ago i wandered in, bored, just to have a look at the latest phones - one of the salesmen got chatting to me, and asked me about my current contract - i kept saying i wasnt interested, but then he starts throwing money at me to get me to cancel my current contract and take a new one with him.
first he offered £60 - said thanks, i wasnt interested
he offered £80 - no thanks
£100 - nope
£150 - still nope..

at which point he went in the back to chat to his manager - he offered me £200 cash there and then, and the latest top-of the range handset on an 18month contract!
i only had 4 months left on my previous deal, which totalled about £160 - i called them up straight away and lowered my deal so it was about £80 for the last 4 months - ended up with a new phone and £120 to play with!

AG {Ed001's Note - I got a free Galaxy Tab in there last week, just for getting a phone I was going to get anyway, on the contract I was going to get.}

(1)
(0)

Interesting, i'm in the market so to speak after xmas and o2 are pee'ing me off. Mort {Ed001's Note - you are best getting phone contracts in the run up to Xmas, that is when the best offers of gifts are about as a rule.}

(0)
(0)

It expires on Jan 6th Ed. My current phone is politely knackered. I went in to o2 about 2 weeks ago and the geezer refused to do anything about it. I'm considering complaining once i'm sorted. Was going to have a look at their competitors. {Ed001's Note - ah ok, the thing you can do, if you were staying with the same company, is to get the deal with whatever freebies from phones4u or carphone whorehouse, then phone up your phone company afterwards and ask for a reduction. I have been with Orange years, mostly because me mam used to work for them, and I always get the shop to give me discount, then phone up Orange when I get home and get them to give me a long term customer discount. It can add up nicely, I got over £20 a month knocked off my contract this time around.}

(0)
(0)

Yeah i was really annoyed, all the geezer said was we can send it for repair, or loan you a phone for 25 quid, but all he offered was some old crap from about 4 years ago talk about basic. I got the impression he just couldn't be bothered, but if i'd had massive boobs and a bum he would have bent over backwards.

Best be an improvement when i go back in else i am off straight down the road. Mort. {Ed001's Note - customer service is appalling with some of them, they just don't care about helping you because there is no commission in it for them.}

(1)

Whats worse was he was the store manager!

Hey all,

Have a look at the website Saynoto0870.com.
I have used this site for years now, any banks, energy providers, phone and TV providers etc that use 0870,0845 even 0800 (which aren't free if you're calling from a mobile) tend to be listed on here. You can put in either the premium rate number or the name of the company and it will give you an alternative geographical number (i.e 0207, 02920 etc) which means save these numbers to your phone and any time you call on of these companies from your mobile and are on hold for 40 minutes it's either coming out of your free minutes on contract or being charged 10p per minute instead of about 80p per minute on PAYG.

Also, if you click on the links tabs at the top of the home page, it will give you links to cheapest energy providers, cheapest mobile phone contracts (free line rental), cheap laptop deals, cheap removal deals, cheapest broadband etc, and theres also a link to the money saving expert website. All very useful and interesting. Hope this helps,

If your on sky, this is for you. You have to call up sky, and threaten to leave. before you do this, you have to have some idea of what channels you want, because that's what ive been doing, and i now get sky movies free for every 6 months. after 6 months, you call them again, and you can say the same stuff, and get the same stuff. Simples!
